Bishop Michael Reid shares how the late Demos Shakarian led him to Christ Jesus. This interview was recorded for Miracles – Faith – Healing magazine in 2004.
When did you first come into contact with Demos Shakarian?
It was 1965 and I was an angry atheistic policeman who alleged that God did not exist. I attended a meeting held by Demos Shakarian at the New Gallery on Regent Street. People had told me that God spoke to Christians and, as a true sceptic, I went early to check the auditorium for micro-phones and loudspeakers! However, as I sat and listened to testimony after testimony of delivered drug addicts I began to realise that I had no rational answer for their changed lives. It was at the end of the meeting that Demos Shakarian approached me and asked me to talk about drug addiction at another meeting. He made no mention of God or religion so I decided to go along. He later told me that God had spoken to him and told him “Go get that man, I have a work for him to do”
What happened then?
I attended the meeting he invited me to. And as the collection was being taken, I heard the audible voice of God, He told me to ‘give all the money I had and He would provide’. I looked round to see who had spoken to me so clearly. I took the contents of my wallet and placed it in the offering plate. As the plate continued down the row I ruefully watched its progress as I realised what I had done! However, I have lived by this principle ever since and God has always provided.
After the altar call Demos came straight to me. As the auditorium began to clear Demos and I sat and talked. I said “you know those drug addicts and alcoholics are hooked — but I am more hooked than they are because there are things in my life that I can’t get free from – I’m driven by blind ambition, hatred – so many things. I am more trapped than they are.” Demos laughed and invited me for something to eat. As I cut into my steak I remembered I had no money and God whispered to my heart “See, i did provide”.
How did Demos Shakarian influence your life?
We went back to Demos’hotel room and he spoke words to me that I will never forget; “You know, Jesus died for your sins on Calvary’s tree.” For the first time in my life I believed it with my heart. As Demos and Rose started to pray I experienced a sudden feeling of joy. I wanted to laugh and laugh.
I left the Hilton hotel at 3 o’clock in the morning and sat up until daybreak reading the New Testament Demos had given me, I was “on fire” with the joy of salvation. I was filled with the Holy Spirit the next morning and as I laughed and cried, I suddenly realised I was speaking in an unknown language. I subsequently left the police and started working in a home for drug addicts and alcoholics.
How has Demos Shakarian influenced your ministry?
It was Demos’ initial obedience to the word of God “Go get that man, I have a work for him to do” that brought me to Christ. As a result of his faithfulness to God, I started a ministry in the UK and now pastor a church of more than 800 regular members. I have also founded a university which is affiliated with Oral Roberts University in Tulsa and the Global Gospel Fellowship for Christian leaders worldwide. I started a Christian school in 1982 which in 2003 was ranked second in England for exam results by The Times, Michael Reid Ministries also has a television program “What Can Do For You” which airs every weekday and is reaching thousands worldwide with the gospel.
I thank God for a man who obeyed His Word because as a result my life was transformed and God has used me to build a mighty work in England and preach salvation to millions all over the world.
